012 Is the Future: GALXBOY Enters the Sneaker Arena

South Africa’s streetwear landscape has long been shaped by global sneaker giants, but in recent years a new generation of local brands has begun to challenge that dominance. One of the most notable moments in this shift arrived when Vuitots and the team behind the brand GALXBOY unveiled the 012 Sneaker Collection, marking the brand’s official entry into footwear after years of building influence through apparel and youth culture.

The launch signals more than just another sneaker drop. For GALXBOY, it represents a natural evolution of a brand that has spent nearly two decades building cultural credibility in South African street fashion. Founded by Thatiso Dube, the label grew from a simple slogan printed on a T-shirt in 2008 into one of South Africas most recognizable youth-driven streetwear brands, deeply connected to hip-hop culture and urban identity.

Speaking during the launch event, Vuitots reflected on the origins of the project and the broader vision behind it. He explained that when they first looked at the sneaker market in South Africa, the landscape was dominated almost entirely by international brands. Rather than simply consuming what came from abroad, the team saw an opportunity to create something rooted locally. The goal was clear: build a South African sneaker brand that could stand confidently alongside global competitors while encouraging local consumers to support homegrown design.

In many ways, the 012 collection embodies that ambition. Named after the Pretoria area code, the sneaker is both a reference to the city’s creative energy and a statement about the cultural influence emerging from the region. Pretoria has produced musicians, artists and designers whose work continues to shape contemporary culture, and the sneaker is positioned as a symbol of that creative ecosystem.

The collection introduces two models - the GBX 012 Trainer and the GBX 012 Runner - marking GALXBOY’s first step into footwear after years of developing its apparel identity. The design process itself was extensive, involving collaboration with UK-based footwear designer Andrew Turner, whose experience with global brands helped refine the technical construction of the sneakers while maintaining the brand’s distinctly South African aesthetic.

The result is a pair of sneakers that balance style, durability and everyday wearability. The Trainer features a clean cupsole silhouette crafted from premium materials, while the Runner introduces a more performance-inspired look designed for comfort and movement. Details such as full-grain leather uppers, reinforced construction and lightweight cushioning point to the brand’s ambition to compete not just culturally, but technically, with international footwear brands.

At the launch, the first release arrived in a triple-black colourway, a deliberate choice according to the team behind the brand. Black sneakers are universally wearable, making them the easiest entry point for consumers encountering the silhouette for the first time. But this is only the beginning. Several additional colourways are already planned as the collection evolves.

Price, interestingly, is not the central narrative the brand wants to push. With the Trainer retailing around R4,300 and the Chain version around R4,800, the sneakers sit in the premium streetwear category. Yet Vuitots emphasised that the brand is not interested in persuading people through price positioning alone. Instead, the philosophy is simple: put the product on the table and allow consumers to decide whether it speaks to them.

That confidence reflects the broader trajectory of the brand itself. GALXBOY has grown into a cultural force partly because it has always been driven by identity and community rather than purely commercial strategy. Its clothing has appeared in music videos, hip-hop lyrics and street style culture across the country, even gaining recognition through artists such as the late rapper AKA, who frequently referenced the brand in his work.

The move into sneakers therefore feels less like a sudden expansion and more like the next chapter in a longer journey - one that mirrors the global evolution of streetwear brands that begin with apparel and eventually develop full lifestyle ecosystems.

Perhaps the most striking moment during a conversation with Vuitots came when he was asked to describe 012 in a single word. His answer was immediate: the future. For him, the sneaker represents more than design. It represents the possibility that South African creativity can shape global culture rather than simply follow it.

He ended the conversation with advice for young designers watching the moment unfold. His message was direct and uncomplicated: start as soon as you can. Build something. Experiment. The world, he suggests, is ready to see what African creativity can produce.

With the launch of the GALXBOY 012 Sneaker Collection, that statement is no longer just an idea. It is now a pair of sneakers stepping confidently into the global streetwear arena.
