Tamilnadu is major base for leather industry with 70% output: Dy CM
“Availability of raw material, skilled labour and rapid adoption of technology enabled the industry to grow faster in Tamilnadu. The major production centres of leather and leather products, in the State are Chennai, Ambur, Ranipet, Vanniyambadi, Peranambut, Trichy and Dindigul,” said the deputy CM.
Assuring that the State government will continue to provide necessary policy and other support to the leather industry, Panneerselvam stated that the industry provides employment to about 2.5 million people, in the country with 46 per cent production being exported.
He added that with Rs 10,000 crore export earnings each year, it is one of India’s top export earning industries.
“The first fair was held in the year 1986 at Valluvar Kottam. The Council of Leather Exports, is very active, in export promotion activities and development of Indian Leather Industry,” Panneerselvam said at the event.
The expo will witness participation from more than 300 exhibitors from India and 150 exhibitors from 23 overseas countries.
