Good scope for youth in footwear industry: CFTI director

‘Institute offering various training courses with job potential’
The Central Footwear Training Institute (CFTI) is planning to expand its footprints in the State by providing training and employment opportunities to youth besides offering its services to the industry.

In a bid to create awareness on the lucrative opportunities available in the footwear sector, CFTI director K. Murali, at a press conference, listed out the courses that the central institute, under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, located in Chennai, was currently offering for students with various educational qualifications.

Mr. Murali said that CFTI was offering seven long-term and eight short-term courses in manufacture and design, footwear technology and other areas.

“The government has allocated over ₹750 crore for development of human resources in the industry. Being the pioneer in footwear training, the institute aims to bring out best professionals required for the industry,” Mr. Murali said.

One of the long-term courses would give students an opportunity to get trained in London’s Leicester College for six months, he said.

The CFTI was planning to train about 700 persons for an upcoming leather unit in Chittoor in short-term courses as part of an outreach programme.

“The outreach programme is intended to help industries get skilled workers. If more units come up at the leather cluster announced by the State, CFTI will set up an institute to train and produce a number of skilled workers and professionals,” Mr. Murali added.

He said CFTI was ready to extend help to the Leather Industries Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh.

Free training for SC, STs
Mr. Murali said there were plenty of opportunities for youth in the industry and CFTI would provide 100% free training for SC and ST candidates in all courses. “Many of those trained at the institute are now employed by Indian and multinational companies located across the country in various positions from operators to managers,” he said.
