Nike Is Changing the Future of Women’s Footwear

The research and development team at Nike continue to innovate for the future, and while the company recently implemented adaptive technology to its bras, and released its Pro Hijab to empower women of other ethnicities, the Swoosh is looking to redefine women’s sneakers differently, whether it’s intended for the basketball court, track, football field and beyond.

With sneakers noted as a transcendent symbol of athletic and stylistic identity, Nike has initiated four new ways of thinking about sneakers for women, and here’s how it’s shaping up.
Expanded Sizing

The most coveted Nike collaborations, including the next release from Virgil Abloh x Nike The TEN with the OFF-White x Air Jordan 1 “All White,” will be available in women’s sizes, as well as more of the Nike Air Force 1 and Air Max lines later this fall.

Unique Retail Experiences

A curated selection of sneakers, consisting of classic styles and iconic collabs, forms the backbone of Nike Unlaced, the company’s new sneaker destination for women, as product curations will be directed by influential creatives and stylists from New York, Paris, London, Shanghai and more.

Exclusive Services

Through Nike Unlaced, women will have access to a broad variety of colorways in performance footwear, and thus wider styling options.

New Voices

With the sneaker community predominantly male, Nike is looking to change the dynamic by creating more curator-led retail partnerships and collaborations with women, like A.L.C.’s Andrea Lieberman and the International Girls Crew on the iconic Nike Cortez, and the 1 Reimagined project, Nike’s first collection of footwear designed entirely by a 14-strong female design collective.
