Manohar Lal Khattar bats for leather industry in Karnal

CHANDIGARH: Though the Haryana government passed the most stringent cow protection law in the country in 2015 with rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years, now chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar is acting as a catalyst for the growth of leather industry with a proposal to set up national design studio (NDS) for research on leather products at his hometown Karnal.
With a communique addressed to Union minister of commerce and industry Nirmala Sitharaman, Khattar has sent a seven-page project proposal for establishment of NDS at Karnal to cater to the leather industry in north Indian states. He has assured all the support in establishing the studio.
The letter dated April 20, a copy with the TOI, reads, "Leaders of this industry in Haryana have often highlighted the need to establish a national design studio to promote research into the process of designing in a manner that anticipates these changes with focus on footwear and leather goods and accessories." The chief minister has expressed that NDS shall be a boon to the state which has footwear manufacturers such as Lakhani, Liberty, Action, Relaxo, Lancer, Today, Columbus, Aeroback, and Welcome.Haryana government is also coming up with mega leather cluster (MLC) to be set up over 105 acres in industrial model township at Sohna. After a delegation of council for leather exports met the chief minister on April 20, the state government had claimed that about 150 to 200 production units are expected to be set up in MLC and would attract investment worth of Rs 500 crore.
Khattar, in his letter, has added that NDS needs to be set up in a centrally located place at Karnal on Delhi-Ambala rail line and Sher Shah Suri Marg (Grand Trunk road) connected with all important places as it is 123-km from Delhi and 130-km from Chandigarh.
The project proposal mentions that footwear sector is one of the focus sectors in the Haryana's enterprise promotion policy-2015 as well as in the 'Make in India' initiative of the central government. Sitharaman has been communicated that NDS shall also immensely help the companies located in the Footwear Park in Sector 16 and 17 of Bahadurgarh town which has been developed by Hsiidc.
Proposal to set up NDS has been mooted for providing critical support to the footwear, leather and accessories industry in the area of design so that the industry could become more competitive in terms of design, cost, quality and delivery time in the global market.
