Tannery Staff Dies at Work Site; Villagers, Kin Cry Foul

VELLORE: A 32-year-old tannery worker has allegedly died of asphyxiation in the company he was working in.

Villagers and relatives of the deceased, identified as S Charles hailing from Venkata Samuduram village staged a protest on Tuesday afternoon, along with his dead body.

According to sources, Charles complained of chest pain at about 11.30 am and was rushed to a private hospital in the locality. The doctors declared him brought dead.

On information, Charles’s wife Chithra, who is six months pregnant, together with his relatives took his body to the tannery company and staged a protest demanding stern action against the management of the company. Police personnel attached to Ombarabad reached the spot and pacified the protestors assuring them that inquiries will be made. Police then transported the body to a Government Hospital for post-mortem. Following a complaint from Village Administrative Officer M Perumal, the police filed a case under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the Code for Criminal Prodedure and are investigating, said Inspector of Ombarabad Station, K Venkatesan. Sources also said that the management of the company gave a compensation of `3 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
