Ghaziabad tannery gets pollution board notice

GHAZIABAD: The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) on Saturday issued closure notice to a Dasna-based tannery for discharging toxic effluents into Hindon.

Officials said the unit's notice was issued to Exclusive Leathers under provisions of Water (Prevention & Control) of Pollution Act, 1974 after the company's unitwas found to be releasing untreated effluents into Dasna drain, which flows into Hindon. The board also asked power discom Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited to stop power supply to the unit.

Officials of the UPPCB had inspected the tannery on September 27 and collected samples, which were found to be having excess quantities of trivalent chromium, a hazardous element. The effluents also contained high levels of biochemical oxygen demand and total soluble solids.

"The tannery can resume operations only after it takes corrective measures. Other units in the Hindon belt are also under scanner," an official said.
