Footwear store owner held for fraud in Kochi
The owner of a footwear store on M.G. Road was taken into custody on charge of selling footwear made by other companies under their own brand.
P.V. Paulose, 60, of Pachalam, was detained following a raid by the police and the Sales Tax Department. An Edakochi complainant had registered the complaint after she found that a pair of shoes she purchased from the store for Rs. 400 was being sold on the pavement at Broadway for Rs. 250. She peeled away the sticker on the shoes she had bought to find the store had stuck their brand’s sticker atop that of the original maker.
Police and Sales Tax officials inspected the store. They found that several shoes marked as discount sale were in fact made by other companies, but being marketed under the store’s brand.. “The Sales Tax Department has found that the store’s stock register and purchase register has not been kept properly. The department will inspect the registers and take action if they find excess stock,” the police said in a press release.
