Government minister opens 28th IILF

The 28th Chennai edition of the India International Leather Fair (IILF) was inaugurated by Honorable Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, Chennai on January 31,2013.
S. Jagathrakshakan, Honorable Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry was the ‘Guest of Honour’ and Mrs Rita Menon, Chairperson and Managing Director, ITPO presided over the inaugural function. Among other high dignitaries present on the occasion were R. K. Jalan, President, Council for the Leather Exports, Malay Shrivastava, Executive Director, ITPO.

S. Jagathrakshakan in his keynote address said that the leather sector is a labour intensive industry and generates meaningful livelihood for millions of Indian citizens. He informed that from just US$1.41 billion in 1990-91, the export earnings of leather industry has grown to about US$5 billion in 2011-12.

Rita Menon, CMD, ITPO highlighted the salient features of the fair in her presidential address, she informed that this year the fair has attracted exhibitor participation from 23 countries. She added that ITPO has made additional efforts to provide facilities for the convenience of the visiting business delegates from India and abroad. She said that redevelopment plan is being pursued for building a world class integrated Exhibition-cum-Convention complex at Pragati Maidan.

New CLE President, R.K. Jalan presented the problems and prospects of the Indian leather industry. Earlier, the welcome address was proposed by Malay Shrivastava, Executive Director, ITPO. The IILF 2013 inauguration function was marked by the Distribution of Annual CLE Export Excellence Awards 2011-12.
