The Hon'ble Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Government of India, Mr. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia laid the ‘Foundation Stone’ of the 'Footwear Design & Development Institute' (FDDI) at Gram Maharajpura Panchhyat, Haripur, Phawa No. 42, Survey No. 57/1 58, 61/1/1 1 on Gram Puraposar Road, District - Guna, Madhya Pradesh on 28th July 2012.

On this occasion, Mr. Anup Wadhawan, IAS, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Mr. Mukesh Jain, PS to the Hon'ble Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Raajeev j Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI, Mr. Ajay Kumar, IRS, Secretary, FDDI, Mr. Sameer Kumar Srivastava, IRS, Sr. Executive Director, FDDI, Mr. Amit Kumar Sharma, IRS, Executive Director and prominent leather & footwear industrialists from Madhya Pradesh were present.
Leather work has been practiced in Madhya Pradesh for a number of years. The leather craft of Madhya Pradesh is practiced in a number of towns of the State.

Craftsperson’s in Gwalior, Indore and Dewas make leather shoes, jutties, leather bags, mushk (traditional leather bag in which water is carried) etc. During the long period of evolution, many new products have come up. Nowadays, Indore and Dewas specialize in making leather garments, too.

There has been lot of demand from footwear and leather clusters of Madhya Pradesh to establish 'Footwear Design & Development Institute at Guna.

The objectives for the establishment of FDDI at Guna are:
To ensure gainful qualitative employment to the rural/urban youth by Inducting them in Leather & leather Product Industry which is identified as one of the significant Industry in terms of growth, foreign exchange earnings and employment generation and thus support the target of the Govt. to remove poverty and attain economic growth with qualitative job to the individuals.
To ensure enhanced foreign exchange earnings for the country from the Leather sector which is identified as the thrust area in terms of foreign exchange earnings.
To support the Leather sector of the country in grabbing the opportunity to enhance the export share in the international market which is abysmally low (3%) besides the natural abundance of raw material, low labour cost and many other favorable factors. The opportunity to enhance the export target for India is very high due to shifting of manufacturing base from developing countries to developing nation and antidumping duties levied on the major competitor countries like china and Vietnam.
To support the Industry in attaining global competitiveness in terms of Quality, cost, design variations and delivery on schedule and meet the present and future expansion plan by supplying qualitative trained manpower at all levels.
To cater larger section of India and to help and motivate the meritorious students of all regions to avail the training facilities of FDDI and provide them qualitative employment in Leather and Leather Product and Retail Industries.
To provide a scope for the meritorious students of the districts of Guna and Shivpuri to create a career for themselves in the world of leather, fashion and management.

Proposed Activities
The proposed activities to be carried out at FDDI, Guna are:
To run short term as well as long term courses (diploma and certificates);
Impart training to the supervisor and manager level personnel of industry;
Skill up gradation of industry workers and artisans to improve productivity and competitiveness.
To develop new designs and prototypes for the industry as per the latest trends;
Resource center for the latest trends and fashion;
Pattern grading sample making and CAD-CAM services;
Consultancy on plant layout, process improvement, modernization and up gradation of production line;
Troubleshooting for the industry.
Access to technology to small and medium level entrepreneurs
Services of the Institute
Conducting long term and short term course to meet the human resource requirement of footwear and allied industries;
Conducting short term industry specific courses as and when required to upgrade the existing manpower of the industry;
Providing consultancy and troubleshooting to the industry;
Design & sampling services to the industry;
Providing relevant information and data to the industry;
Providing infrastructure support to the industry.
Expected Outcomes
The FDDI campus at Guna conceived with an objective to train managers, designers, supervisors, shop floor and retail professionals to meet the acute shortage of trained manpower in the Industry will also facilitate gainful qualitative employment to the socio-economic backward community of Central India constituting a significant proportion of the population.

The industries at Madhya Pradesh will be benefited by closer proximity of resources, a world class training center in the form of the FDDI and its experts for helping them to adopt changes as per market requirement.

The establishment of FDDI at Guna will not only benefit the Indian Leather and Footwear Industry in its quest for highly qualified manpower and support infrastructure but will also immensely help in fuelling the rapid growth of Retail sector in India which has the potential of creating over millions direct job within the next six years in the country.

Expected outcomes after the establishment of FDDI at Fursatganj are:
It will provide trained manpower to the Indian Leather Industry which is grappling with its shortage;
Infrastructure development;
It will help in technology transfer and development to the local industries;
It will improve the competitiveness of Indian Industries in Gwalior, Indore and Dewas cluster;
The creation of the catalytic facility for entrepreneurship at the SME & micro level;
Tapping of the potential of the lower labour supply in the long term.
