The international news site Leatherbiz has reported that Bangladesh’s total leather exports increased by 26.4% to $446.9 million in first seven months of the fiscal year 2011-2012 (July-January), according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). They stood at $353.5 million in the same period last year.

The breakdown showed that Bangladesh exported finished leather worth $180.1 million against $149.5 million, showing a growth of 22.4%. Similarly, footwear exports were up by 28.9% to $222.4 million and leather bags and purses by 32.3% to $41.5 million from $172.6 million to $31.4 million respectively in same period last year.

Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $792.3 million for leather sector for 2011-12 (July-June) compared to $651.1 million in the fiscal year 2010-11.

At the current pace of exports the country will end up just shy of the export target at around US$770 million which is an extremely respectable effort considering that exports were US$120 million just one year ago.
